- Create a Plan
One of the best things you can do to ensure you’re ready to move quickly is to create a plan for how you’re going to efficiently pack everything.
For example, you might want to start with packing all non-essentials. Or you can tackle everything room by room.
When you make a plan, make sure you map how long you think it’ll take to complete each room or area -and always give yourself some extra time! This way, you’ll know when you need to start and how quickly you need to work to get things done on time.
- Get the Equipment Ready
If you want to move quickly, you need to be prepared. That includes getting the essentials ready for when you actually start packing.
The last thing you want to do in week one of your plan is to rush around the shops to buy everything you need to help you get started.
Instead, do your shopping as early as possible to make sure you’ve got all the essentials, including things like:
- Boxes of all different sizes. It’s better to overestimate how many you need rather than underestimate!
- Packaging tape - lots of it!
- Scissors or a Stanley knife with replacement blades
- Dustsheets for covering furniture
- Gloves
- Marker pens
- Bubble wrap or newspaper
- Start Decluttering Early
To help you move quickly, start decluttering as early as possible. We’d even recommend doing this before you put your house on the market. A cluttered property isn’t always attractive for buyers during viewings or even in the property listing images.
In our opinion, the earlier you can start shifting the stuff you won’t be taking with you to your new home, the better!
Just make sure you don’t ‘empty’ your property completely before it’s been sold. For example, if you don’t want to keep your dining room table when you move, don’t sell it or give it away just yet. Having it in the room can help buyers visualise the potential of the space.
- Create a System
When you actually start packing, you need to have a good packing system if you want to make life easier when you move.
For example, you can pack your belongings into ‘priority’ and ‘non-priority’ boxes and mark which ones are which. That way, when you move into your new home, you’ll know which boxes to unpack first and which ones to leave until later.
Also, make sure you write down on the outside of the box everything that’s inside.
If you already have a general idea of where you’re going to put certain items in your new home, you can even label them with the room, so you know where to put the box on moving day.
Conclusion
Moving house takes time. There’s a lot to plan, pack and then unpack. But there are lots of things you can do to save time during the process. By prepping things early and having a clear plan of action, you can be settled in your new home quickly and with less stress!
